Did you know that oysters are raised in Lake Hamana? While Miyagi and Hiroshima are famed oyster-producing prefectures, Hamamatsu has been cultivating oysters for over 130 years. Lake Hamana is connected to the ocean, allowing a flow and constant change of nutrients. Moreover, the oysters are moved around in the lake depending on the stage to their growth. The plump meat found in Hamana oysters is rich in minerals. During the harvest season from January to March, local oysters are served at restaurants and food stalls by the lake.
