Happy New Year! The Japanese new year is celebrated by catching the first rays of sunrise. The first sunrise on January 1 is called “hatsuhinode” and is considered an auspicious event. The sun rises around 6:50 in Hamamatsu around this time. Residents gather at places where the eastern sky is visible, such as the Nakatajima Sand Dunes and the estuary of the Tenryu River. The towers at Hamamatsu Castle and Hamanako Garden Park will also be open on New Year’s Day. If you have the chance, we highly recommend experiencing the first sunrise of the year in Hamamatsu.
