Hokoji Temple is the head temple of the Hokoji sect in the Kita Ward of Hamamatsu, with a history spanning 600 years. This mountain temple is not only a famed fall foliage spot but also a place where visitors can partake in various Zen workshops.
The activities include zazen (seated meditation), shakyo (hand-copying Buddhist sutras), and sampling vegan temple food called shojin ryori, which monks commonly eat. The temple also offers overnight stays in temple lodgings, where visitors can deepen their learning of Japanese Zen Buddhism.
