This festival allegedly originated in the mid-16th century, when the former lord of Hamamatsu Castle raised a kite to celebrate his firstborn son. To bless children born in the area, giant kite battles are held during the day at the Nakatajima Sand Dune, while gorgeous floats are paraded downtown at night from May 3 to 5. In order to avoid the further spread of COVID-19 infections, only the kite battles will be held at the sand dunes this year. To view the event, spectators will be asked to follow mandatory protocols.
