The other day, a fishing experience class and a marine trash pickup rally were held at Arai Benten Sea Fishing Park and Arai Benten Beach in Kosai City as part of the “Sea and Japan Project in Lake Hamana”!

This event is held so that parents and children can rediscover the charm of Lake Hamana, which is a familiar place, while participating in various hands-on activities.

I also participated, so I’ll report on what happened!

What is the Sea and Japan Project?

The Sea and Japan Project is a project that spreads the circle of action throughout Japan to communicate the current state of the ocean that supports us to as many people as possible and connect the ocean to the future.

The experience event in Kosai City that we will introduce this time is an activity under the jurisdiction of the “Sea and Japan Project in Lake Hamana.”

In addition, various activities are being carried out all over the country, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south.

What can you catch at Lake Hamana? Exciting parent-child fishing experience class!

First, a parent-child fishing experience class! This year it was held on Saturday, September 16th.

Among the participants this time, there were many who said, “I’ve never been to Lake Hamana,” “I’ve never gone fishing,” and “I don’t know what kind of creatures live in Lake Hamana.”

Even if you have never fished before, all the necessary equipment is provided, so you can easily participate!

This experience is an opportunity for you to have fun learning about the sea creatures that actually live in Lake Hamana by seeing and touching them.

It’s also an opportunity to reaffirm the charm of Lake Hamana, which we tend to forget because it’s so close to us.

Most of all, it is a wonderful time for parents and children to empathize with each other while experiencing the difficulty of fishing and the joy of catching a fish.

What kind of creatures are there in Lake Hamana?

Do you know what kind of creatures currently live in Lake Hamana?

In fact, Lake Hamana is home to around 800 species of creatures, including black sea bream, flounder, horse mackerel, and octopus!

I myself was shocked that there were so many creatures.

One of the reasons why so many living things exist is that

Lake Hamana is a brackish water lake where seawater from the Pacific Ocean flows in at the cut point under the Hamana Ohashi Bridge, and the reason for this is that it is rich in nutrients!

Before the experience, we listened to the knowledge and stories about the creatures of Lake Hamana from the staff, which made us even more interested in Lake Hamana.

I can feel how eager I am to go fishing as soon as possible!

The excitement of not knowing when you will catch a fish is also the real pleasure of fishing.

Over time, at each spot

“I caught a big brother!” “I caught a small fish!” “I caught a blowfish.”

I heard many different voices.

While observing the fish you actually caught, event staff will also explain what kind of creatures they are.

When I told him that this was a baby fish named ○○, he became very interested!

I think it was a very fresh experience for my family, who don’t usually fish.

They also saw an ordinary angler catch a large black sea bream.

“There are fish that big in Lake Hamana!”

They looked surprised!

A garbage-picking rally that involves picking up garbage from Lake Hamana and the Pacific Ocean (Enshu Sea)

The next activity we will introduce is a marine debris pickup rally!

This activity was carried out with the cooperation of Mr. Sasaki of DIGtag, a non-profit organization that conducts sea turtle surveys and actively picks up trash in Lake Hamana and the Enshu Sea.

The area we picked up trash this time was Arai Benten Beach in Kosai City.

This place is open as a beach from July to August.

There are many people who take care to do the obvious thing of not throwing away trash, but even so, there is still a lot of floating and discarded garbage, such as plastic containers and fishing hooks.

There was a lot of garbage and plastic garbage that washed ashore into the ocean, people who visited the beach littered, and garbage from their daily lives.

The garbage has an impact on the ecosystem of seaside plants and other creatures that live in Lake Hamana and the Enshu Sea, such as loggerhead sea turtles that spawn in the Pacific Ocean (Enshu Sea).

The garbage problem is overflowing without us even knowing about it.

You won’t know the current state of this ocean unless you actually see it.

We hope that the experience of picking up trash will provide an opportunity to learn about the current state of Lake Hamana and the Pacific Ocean (Enshu Sea).

What kind of garbage is falling?

Parents and children participate in a garbage picking rally while exploring what kind of garbage is lying around.

There was a lot of trash, from large tires to small plastic trash.

that’s right. Garbage generated from households, such as plastic bottles and other plastic items, is also thrown away as a matter of course.

The naive idea that if you throw it away, someone will pick it up. If we don’t pick them up, the sea and town will become polluted.

The garbage problem will not be solved as long as someone has the idea that if they are good, it is good.

If everyone has the will to take care of this resource called Lake Hamana, we can keep Lake Hamana and the Pacific Ocean (Enshu Sea) clean.

I would be happy if this article inspired more people to want to protect an environment where many people and the living creatures can live comfortably.

It was a half-day event, but after the event, some parents and children said, “I’m glad I came today.”

Both the event organizers and participants were able to smile.
